Billy Bob Thornton Is A High Ranking Oil Man In Yellowstone Creator’s New Western Thriller Show

The official Landman trailer has arrived. The new Taylor Sheridan TV show is the Yellowstone creator’s latest outing for Paramount+, based on the podcast Boomtown. Featuring a robust ensemble cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Demi Moore, Jon Hamm, Andy Garcia, and Michael Peña, the show is set in the high-stakes world of West Texas oil rigs, following an oil company’s crisis manager named Tommy Norris (Thornton) as well as his family and the power players and roughnecks in his orbit.

Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for Landman. The video sets up the stakes for Tommy Norris immediately, opening with a monologue from the character about how the oil industry makes $3 billion a day and how the part of his job that involves managing people “can get you killed.” It then introduces some of those people, including bigwig Monty Miller (Hamm) and his wife Cami (Moore), crewman Armando (Peña), and various other people whose lives are rooted in the industry.

What The Landman Trailer Means
Taylor Sheridan Continues To Embrace His Neo-Western Instincts

Even as the Yellowstone universe continues to expand with the upcoming season 5 part 2, 1923 season 2, and the new spinoff show The Madison, Sheridan is showcasing how he can apply the instincts that made that franchise a hit to new material. Just like his previous efforts with the sprawling Paramount Network and Paramount+ universe, the new show features a robust ensemble of actors playing characters from a variety of backgrounds with different interpersonal dynamics ranging from business to family and beyond.

The trailer also reveals that he is applying the same neo-Western patina to the material that he has with many of the previous works that he is best known for, including the Yellowstone shows and the movie Hell or High Water. In addition to the fact that the setting of modern day Texas lends itself to the subgenre, the trailer brings in many visual and character elements that evoke the genre, including a darkly comic line where Tommy tells a bartender that “I quit drinking, I’ll stick with beer.”

Our Take On The Landman Trailer
Landman Could Be Another Sheridan Hit

It remains to be seen if Landman gains the same kind of notoriety as the record-breaking Yellowstone or Sheridan’s other Paramount+ efforts including Special Ops: Lioness, Mayor of Kingstown, and Tulsa King. However, it seems to be setting itself up for success in every possible way ahead of its premiere, gathering a robust crew of well-known figures both in front of and behind the camera. The trailer also showcases that, while it is similar to Yellowstone, the interpersonal drama and the stakes are very different and frequently heightened, which could give the show a unique flavor that helps it thrive.
