With 32 years of romantic history behind them, it’s no surprise that there’s still underlying feelings between Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Phil Mitchell (Steve
McFadden) in EastEnders.
Their on/off relationship has been a talking point between viewers of the BBC One soap for decades, ever since the Sharongate scandal that saw their affair exposed
by Phil’s brother Grant (Ross Kemp), who was married to Sharon at the time.
They eventually married in 2014, but divorced six years later after Phil caused the boat crash that killed her beloved son Denny (Bleau Landau).
However, in tonight’s (18th June) episode, there seemed to be a breakthrough and hopes of a reconciliation after Sharon confessed everything about Keanu Taylor’s (Danny Walters) Christmas Day murder. He now joins the ever-growing line of Walford locals that know Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) was responsible for stabbing him with a meat thermometer to stop him throttling Sharon.
Everyone else believes Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) was to blame after the six women involved expertly framed him.
Earlier this week, after hearing some unusual comments from Linda concerning Dean during a conversation with Keanu’s mum Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley), Callum Highway’s (Tony Clay) interest was piqued and he spoke to Phil about his concerns.
To make matters worse, on his arrival, an unusual text from Linda came through regarding Karen’s departure and Callum’s questions – consider Phil’s eyebrow well and truly raised!
Phil charged round to Sharon’s house and after spotting an unusual text on her phone, asked her outright whether she knew more than she was letting on.
Constantly shutting him down, Sharon should’ve probably known her ex-husband wouldn’t back down and he decided instead to go to the Queen Vic to ask Linda, knowing that she would crumble under the pressure due to her alcoholism.
As he was about to head out the door, Sharon blurted out the truth, and the pair were forced to have a heart to heart about the events.
Clasping her hand as she broke down, Phil assured her that he could’ve been a huge help had she admitted the truth earlier. Sharon told him that her primary worry was that if they were both sent down, their son Albie would be left without parents.
In a meaningful moment, she spoke about how she believed she was cursed after losing everyone she loved – including her birth and adoptive parents, and Denny. He assured her that because he was responsible for his death, he owed her and vowed to help her moving forward.Sharon suggested they were soul mates, and Phil was quick to agree. Everything that had come before them was water under the bridge.
Quick-thinking, he suggested that they throw Linda under the bus before she implicates herself but Sharon panicked about the wider effect on herself and her co-conspirators Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), Denise Fox (Diane Parish), Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth) and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal).
Promising to keep shtum, Phil looked into Sharon’s eyes and it was like they were transported back to 1992 with a kiss.. or two.
Could they be about to reunite, or is this part of a wider plan to ensure he stays quiet?
